Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto and Brown Missionary Baptist Church are collaborating to provide 120 free HeartScore tests to help assess DeSoto County law enforcement officers’ risk for heart attack. So far, nearly 80 law enforcement officers have been scanned or had their appointments scheduled.

Representatives of the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, Southaven Police Department, Walls Police Department, Hernando Police Department, Horn Lake Police Department and Olive Branch Police Department met at Baptist DeSoto on Thursday, Aug. 29. They toured the outpatient computerized tomography (CT) scan department and observed a demonstration of a HeartScore test.

“HeartScore is a quick and inexpensive test that detects heart disease before symptoms appear,” said Brian Hogan, administrator and CEO of Baptist DeSoto. “We are delighted to work with Brown Missionary Baptist Church to help support our local law enforcement officers by providing 120 free HeartScore tests.”

Research shows a direct correlation between the amount of calcium in coronary arteries and the likelihood of a future heart attack. HeartScore measures the amount of calcium in coronary arteries, and the results can be used to determine if a person should take preventive action to avoid having a heart attack.
