June was an exciting time for medical residents at Baptist Memorial hospitals as they graduated and moved on to the next phase of their careers. Graduating residents included those in the inaugural classes of the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi Internal Medicine Residency Program and Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women OB-GYN Residency Program, as well as the fourth class of the internal medicine residency program at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital.
Baptist North Mississippi Internal Medicine Residency Program
Twelve residents completed Baptist North Mississippi’s three-year internal medicine residency training program, directed by Dr. Seger S. Morris. Graduates included Dr. Alexander Crossett, Dr. Mahmoud Elshawwaf, Dr. Michael Ghaly, Dr. Johnny Green, Dr. Garrett Hadley, Dr. Simra Kiran, Dr. Joseph Kordsmeier, Dr. Shravanti Muthu, Dr. Juvarez Ogbuneke, Dr. Swetha Priyadarshan, Dr. Sajan Sarker and Dr. Swarna Sarker.
Throughout their training, residents helped establish standards in curriculum, didactics, scholarly activity and the culture of education at Baptist North Mississippi. They welcomed additional classes of resident physicians in 2022 and 2023 and saw the program grow to a full class of 36 resident physicians.
The residents also played key roles in the second phase of the program’s accreditation process. The program was awarded continued accreditation with no citations by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Baptist Women’s Hospital OB-GYN Residency Program
Four residents in the inaugural class of the OB-GYN residency program at Baptist Women’s Hospital graduated from the program directed by Dr. Frank Ling. Graduates included Dr. Erin Baldwin, Dr. Sophia Kantemyr, Dr. Natalia Klett and Dr. Rufus Samuel.
The residents donated a ginkgo biloba tree to commemorate their growth, knowledge and experiences in the program. They also contributed the tree to show their appreciation for their mentors, surgical and didactic experiences, and the relationships they forged along the way.
Patients and their loved ones will be able to view the ginkgo biloba tree as they arrive at the hospital. The residents hope the tree will serve as a reminder of the foundation laid for all future Baptist OB-GYN residents and the positive impact of residents on patients, the hospital and the community.
NEA Baptist Internal Medicine Residency Program
NEA Baptist held a graduation for eight internal medicine residents, the fourth class of physicians to graduate from the NEA Baptist Internal Medicine Residency Program, directed by Dr. Michael Mackey. The program has been successful in preparing physicians for careers in both hospital and clinic settings.
Graduates included Dr. Joseph Wesley Bennett, Dr. Zane Cannon, Dr. Gabriella Gorton, Dr. Olga Jatskevich, Dr. Derika Mays, Dr. Puja Patel, Dr. Milap Shah and Dr. Niki Shah.
To date, NEA Baptist has hired 10 program graduates in various roles and others have shown interest in returning following a fellowship.
