Baptist Cancer Center Dietitians Empower Patients at Hope Lodge

Baptist Cancer Center clinical dietitians recently led a tropical-themed nutrition-focused cooking event for 20 patients and family members at the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Memphis, Tennessee.

Baptist Cancer Center dietitians Cassy Tigner, Colleen Touchstone, Kara Wilson and Madison Domek led the interactive session that provided evidence-based nutrition recommendations.

Attendees participated in a DIY smoothie bowl bar and fruit kabob station, where they learned about the importance of balanced nutrition and the role of carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals in cancer prevention and during cancer treatment. Through hands-on activities, patients and caregivers gained practical ideas for creating nutritious, satisfying snacks and meals at home.

The cooking and nutrition segment led by Baptist Cancer Center was part of American Cancer Society’s one-year celebration of the EMPOWER Program, which is designed to support the health and well-being of cancer patients and their caregivers.

“We were honored to participate in Hope Lodge’s EMPOWER anniversary celebration and provide a hands-on nutrition experience for patients and caregivers,” Tigner said. “Nutrition is an important part of cancer care, and we enjoyed sharing practical strategies that attendees can use every day to support their health and well-being. We hope participants left feeling encouraged, informed and empowered in their cancer journey.”
