October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s a good reminder to schedule a mammogram if you’re 40 years old or older or if your doctor suggests you get one because of your family history. This is an important test for women, especially African American women because they die from breast cancer nearly 40% more than white women. That is a disappointing statistic, but you can do something about it. Conduct regular breast self-exams and get your annual mammogram once you reach the appropriate age. And encourage your female friends and family members to do the same. Breast cancer is treatable and has a better outcome when it’s diagnosed early and before the disease has spread. This month, Baptist’s mobile mammography unit will be in the Memphis Komen Race Store parking lot at the Carrefour at Kirby Woods on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Make it fun and plan to get your mammogram with other members of your church congregation or community organization. Call 901-227-PINK (7465) to schedule an appointment or find out if you’re eligible for financial assistance through a grant fund.
