Dr. Thom Mayer, medical director for the NFL Players Association, is the featured speaker at two separate events: an in-person reception on Thursday, May 4 and a virtual breakfast presentation on Friday, May 5. Baptist is proud to sponsor these free CityCurrent events.
Dr. Mayer is an expert in cardiovascular disease, ranging from cardiac arrest and aortic dissection to commotio cordis. In 2009, he led the work which demanded that all NFL teams have emergency action plans, which paid off last year when a player was successfully resuscitated during an NFL game. During his presentation, Dr. Mayer will be sharing many lessons learned and the importance of being prepared to respond to emergencies, as individuals and a community.
On Sept. 11, 2001, Dr. Mayer served as the Command Physician at the Pentagon Rescue Operation and has served on three Defense Science Board Task Forces, advising the Secretary of Defense. Most recently, in 2022, Dr. Mayer helped lead a mobile team to Ukraine, treating almost 350 patients and training over 1,700 Ukrainian medical staffers.
He is one of the most widely sought speakers on healthcare patient experience, leadership and management, hardwiring flow, trauma and emergency care, pediatric emergency care, EMS/disaster medicine and sports medicine. He was the originator of the NFL Concussion Guidelines program and thus has changed the nature of concussion diagnosis and management world-wide. His work in each of these areas has resulted in changing the very fabric of patient care.
Dr. Mayer will be the featured speaker at a virtual breakfast on Friday, May 5, from 8:30-9:45 a.m. that will be streamed live from the Great Hall & Conference Center in Germantown, TN.
These events are FREE, but registration is required.
