We recently held our annual Quality Symposium. It’s an opportunity for a cross-section of Baptist team members to learn about patient safety practices from experts and one another.
One of the highlights of this event is the story board contest, where groups of team members submit summaries of a quality improvement project. The winning story board receives the President’s Award. Last year, Baptist Memphis won for its safety huddles, which all our other hospitals have since adopted. These huddles have resulted in a sharp decrease in falls and increases in a number of quality indicators.
This year, 18 groups from the following hospitals, physician offices and other entities participated in the story board contest:
- Baptist Medical Group
- Baptist Medical Group-Jenkins and Nease Internal Medicine
- Stern Cardiovascular Foundation
- Baptist Booneville
- Baptist Collierville
- Baptist DeSoto
- Baptist Golden Triangle
- Baptist Huntingdon
- Mississippi Baptist Medical Center (Jackson, Mississippi)
- Baptist Memphis
- NEA Baptist Hospital
- Baptist North Mississippi
- Baptist Restorative Care Hospital
- Baptist Tipton
- Baptist Union City
- Baptist Union County
- Baptist Women’s Hospital
I had the pleasure to serve as one of the judges, and it was remarkable to see how much great work is happening at Baptist. After much deliberation, we gave the President’s Award to Baptist Women’s Hospital for its work to better estimate blood loss during labor—the leading cause of death for women after childbirth. Congratulations to the Baptist Women’s Hospital team ‒ Dr. Laura Bishop, Dr. Riad Homsi, Camielle Fishel, Gina Horne, Carol Thetford and Kerry Griggs ‒ for their terrific work.
This lifesaving practice can be used for neurological and CV surgeries, as well, and I am so excited that other hospitals will benefit from it. Ultimately, that’s the goal of the Quality Symposium, so even though the Baptist Women’s Hospital team received the President’s Award, we’re all winners.
