New Manager Brings Right Skills to BMS

Many of you know the Baptist Management System (BMS) helps manage purpose, people and process.

But you may not know a new team member has come on board to expand the BMS model even further, and to help Baptist become one of the best hospital systems in the nation.

Michael Lewis has joined Baptist as performance improvement manager, working with Skip Steward. Michael’s background in manufacturing with Toyota was especially helpful as BMS uses the LEAN methodology, which originated from the Toyota production system.

“We want to make sure every unit and group within the Baptist system has a clear understanding of the KATA model as well as other aspects of BMS,” said Michael. “As we standardize the way we as an organization achieve our goals, we will continue to strengthen our consistency and structure as an organization. And once everyone is on board as a team/family, we will be able to take this BMS model to the next level and have a massive impact.”

Seeing how the KATA tool has translated so well to health care is no surprise to Michael, who studied engineering at Hampton University and then worked 13 years in manufacturing. “It’s definitely a change of thinking, but here at Baptist, everyone has taken the time and put in the effort to practice it,” he said. “It requires a team effort, and we have seen many successes already.”

Keeping Jesus Christ first, taking care of his family and being a positive supporter for fellow Baptist team members is what drives Michael.

“What gives me satisfaction is helping people solve problems, whether it’s small or large. When you achieve a solution, it feels good and brings enjoyment,” he said. “Because when my Baptist team members succeed, then I will succeed. Problem solving definitely requires patience, but through every problem, you simultaneously strengthen the substrata to your patience and problem-solving skill set.”

Michael and his wife, Dr. Brandi Lewis, have two children. He’s excited to join the Baptist team, and especially to work with Skip Steward, whom he calls an inspirational and courageous leader. “It’s an honor and a pleasure for me, and I hope to be an asset to Baptist.”
