Baptist Medical Group-The Medical Group clinic at 8040 Wolf River Blvd., Suite 200, in Germantown, Tennessee, is the only Baptist Medical Group clinic to house an on-site pharmacy. Audrey Rhyne-Tauxe, practice administrator for the Baptist Medical Group-Wolf River Pharmacy, said the pharmacy, which opened in July 2019, is reminiscent of a small-town pharmacy from 50 years ago, where they knew you, your family and your medication needs.
“It has been a privilege to see the pharmacy grow as much as it has and to realize the potential that we have to help our community and patients,” said Rhyne-Tauxe.
She believes having a pharmacy on-site at the clinic increases patient compliance in filling prescriptions. Being there at the clinic also means any questions for the provider can be answered very easily — with just a quick walk over to the provider. In many pharmacies, there can be a delay in filling prescriptions when the pharmacist has to call the office and wait for a response from the provider.
Baptist Medical Group-Wolf River Pharmacy serves patients who want to fill prescriptions from other clinics, as well. “We have the benefit of all being on Epic. So, there is the secure chat function that’s literally at our fingertips. We can reach out and ask questions even if the patient or the provider is not here on-site,” said Emily Beller, regional operational director for Baptist Medical Group-The Medical Group.
Erin Meeks, PharmD, lead pharmacist at Baptist Medical Group-Wolf River Pharmacy, said the pharmacy has the advantage of being able to check multiple inventories. “That helps us with getting prescriptions that could be limited in stock and with making sure that we’re getting the best price from our distributor,” said Dr. Meeks.
Rhyne-Tauxe said Dr. Meeks keeps a watchful eye on medication supplies, such as difficult-to-find medications like the antiviral drug Paxlovid during COVID-19 peaks. “We always had a steady stream of medication coming in to meet the demand we had. I appreciate Dr. Meeks keeping her finger on the pulse of COVID-19 surges to make sure we were prepared at any time to serve patients who needed it,” said Rhyne-Tauxe.
Helping Patients Afford Medications
The pharmacy employs a patient assistance coordinator who works with insurance companies to set up free or reduced-cost medications for patients, when appropriate.
Rhyne-Tauxe said the pharmacy team also spends time looking for coupons to help save patients money when filling prescriptions. “These big box stores don’t have time to do that,” she commented. “We see better patient compliance when people can afford their medications. We’re making those medications a little bit more accessible to them by making sure we’re getting them the best price we can.”
Rhyne-Tauxe noted the pharmacy was able to help a patient on a migraine medication save more than $1,000 a month. “That is my very best story, but even for a patient who we’re maybe saving $20 a month, it all matters. And what matters more than that is that we are connecting with every single patient who comes through our door. We care about what is truly best for them.”
