NEA Baptist and Baptist Memphis Recognize DAISY Award Winners

NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis honored nurses with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for their demonstrated compassion and willingness to go above and beyond to care for patients and educate family members.

Elizabeth Gillette, BSN, RN, works on 5 West at NEA Baptist. Elizabeth won a DAISY Award for going above and beyond to care for a cancer patient.

“Late in the afternoon, a physician called wanting to admit a patient from the clinic for a chemotherapy infusion. We were in a meeting trying to determine if there would be a chemotherapy nurse available to assist, but night shift staffing was already very low,” explained Elizabeth’s nominator.

Elizabeth volunteered to stay over from her shift to make sure the patient received treatment.

“She ended up staying over four hours after her shift to take care of this patient. She truly has a servant’s heart and is deserving of this award,” said the nomination.

Wendy Welch, RN, serves on 5 West at NEA Baptist. Wendy was recognized with a DAISY Award for the dedication she demonstrated when caring for a patient for several weeks.

“My daughter has been in the hospital for over a month now. Wendy has been her nurse for much of that time. When we see Wendy’s name on the board, we are all relieved,” said Wendy’s nominator.

The family member was thankful that Wendy spent so much time with her daughter, trying to get her to eat and take her medication.

“She knows all our family and calls us by name. She researches on her own time to see if she can find anything extra that will help my daughter. We thank God for her. We call her ‘Wonderful, Wonderful Wendy,’” said the patient’s mother.

Petra Lockhart, RN, with the nursing float pool at Baptist Memphis, earned a DAISY Award for the compassion she showed toward a patient and her family members.

The family member who nominated Petra said, “During what would turn out to be the final days of our mother’s life, Petra not only provided our mom tender care, but also patiently instructed my two brothers and me on the nuances of do-not-resuscitate (DNR), things to watch for during mom’s final stages and everything she and her team would do to keep our mom as comfortable as possible.”

According to the nominator, Petra took the time to say goodbye to the patient and family members during her final shift with them. “Thank you, Petra, for helping give our mom dignity in her final days,” said the family member.
