Explore Health Care Careers and Earn College Credit for Free: Q&A with Tammy Fowler

Baptist team members and their families may sign up to take the online Pathways to Healthcare Careers course offered by Baptist Health Sciences University this summer and earn three hours of college credit with no tuition, fees or other charges! We asked BHSU Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Tammy Fowler for more details on this opportunity.

Which Baptist Memorial Health Care team members may benefit most from this course?

Any Baptist team member, and any of their family members (including extended family), may enjoy learning more about the many health care careers we offer and how to get started. The class will also help team members understand the important work being done by their colleagues who are health care providers at Baptist.

Students taking the class do not need prior college experience or transcripts. However, this is a course for college credit, with assignments and grades, so it will require some time and effort.

What is the date range and time of classes?

The course starts on Tuesday, May 7, and runs through Wednesday, Aug. 14. It is a completely online course for students to access whenever it is convenient for them to complete tasks and assignments. There is no scheduled day or time when classes meet. All interaction (assignments, discussion boards, etc.) are accessed through our web-based course delivery software, Canvas.

There will be opportunities for optional on-campus activities, such as shadowing and workshops, but they are not mandatory for the course.

Which health care careers will be explored during the class?

We will cover all the careers that correspond to the following majors offered at BHSU:

  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Health Administration
  • Medical Laboratory Science
  • Medical Radiography
  • Neurodiagnostic Technology
  • Nuclear Medicine Technology
  • Nursing
  • Public Health
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Respiratory Care
  • Surgical Technology

What else might students expect to learn in this course?

Students will explore their individual strengths and interests as they apply to health care professions; identify career opportunities in the health care field; and create a career plan, including a resume and portfolio to help them seek a health care career pathway.

Can you share who the professors will be?

Our instructors for the course are Patti Waggoner and Paul Criss, faculty in our general education and health studies division. Students will also have opportunities to interact with faculty in all our health care programs.

Is the college credit earned for this class transferable to other schools?

Completion of the course will result in three hours of college credit transferrable to other institutions. The credit granted when transferred will be up to that individual school’s transfer credit policies and programs.
