Epic selected Baptist Memorial Health Care’s Enterprise Reporting and Analytics team to share its improvement process work, “Maximizing the Use and Efficiency of Your Analytics Catalog,” at the annual Epic Expert Group Meetings (XGM) in Verona, Wisconsin, on May 6. The presentation highlighted the innovation and systemwide effect of the team’s process improvement initiative.
“The level of interest from other health systems and organizations in adopting a similar expanded content review model was significant, reinforcing the scalability and relevance of this approach across the broader Epic community,” said Vernita Thornton, system director of Enterprise Reporting and Analytics.
The presentation highlights the team’s committee-based review approach, which brings senior team members together with emerging team members to conduct structured content reviews of all changes and new materials. This team offers historical experience with fresh ideas, strengthening both the review process and the team’s ability to drive meaningful improvement.
The disciplined review process enables the adoption of modern methodologies and system perspectives while improving accuracy, enhancing processing efficiency and reducing the risk of unintended duplication. Activities include the review of metadata, such as report titles, descriptions and optimizations to existing content. The combined effect of these efforts is an improved user experience, increased trust in enterprise data and faster access to self-service insights.
“We are moving from our current phase into expanded enterprise efforts as we transition into fiscal year 2027,” Thornton said. “The process will continue to evolve as we identify additional opportunities to enhance this work and further improve the user’s experience. Over the next year, review team members will rotate to encourage cross-training and broaden organizational capability. This work is critical as we examine our data through a more rigorous and strategic lens, maximizing the value of every deliverable generated on behalf of our requesters.”
Baptist Memorial’s Executive Vice President/Chief Strategy Officer Zach Chandler and Vice President/Chief Improvement Officer Skip Steward, along with Maureen Raimondi from Epic Technical Services, supported the team’s optimization process.
One aim of the process was to enhance the user experience while searching for insights and information within Baptist Memorial’s Reporting Catalog.
“This work represented a meaningful challenge, but our focus stayed on what is in the best interest of Baptist and our users,” said Thornton. “This process created an opportunity for the team to re-evaluate existing content through a modern lens and ensure continued relevance and value. We believe a clean and well-governed data catalog is a foundational requirement for fully realizing future opportunities with large language models, advanced analytics and AI-enabled capabilities.”
