For much of her life, Baptist Memphis sonographer Mary Renfro endeavored to break past barriers keeping her from reaching what would be considered an appropriate weight. Her teenage diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) resulted in insulin resistance and thus, difficulty losing weight. But when she joined a GoHealthy! class, things began to change.
“I broke through the number on the scale I couldn’t budge before and lost 12% of my body weight!” says Mary. “I bought as much fresh produce as possible, read food labels, browsed healthy recipe blogs and cookbooks. I kept trigger foods out of my house. I realized how big a role food played in my life, and I tried focusing on other sources of happiness or stress relief.”
Mary says self-awareness is key.
“Get to know your body and your mind, what works for you and what doesn’t. I take it one day at a time. Every meal is a new opportunity for good choices and some grace.”
