The Baptist Health Sciences University HealthCORE Program and Baptist Memorial Health Care participated in Junior Achievement’s annual JA Career Exploration Fair on May 6 at the Power Center Academy Elementary School and on May 20 at the Power Center Academy Southeast Elementary campus.
Students had the opportunity to experience several hands-on activities designed to engage them and provide a glimpse into real-world laboratory and health care practices.
At the microscope station, students explored two sections. Cocci bacterial slides and slides of the parasite Giardia lamblia provided an opportunity to discuss infectious organisms and how they are identified in a clinical setting. The second section featured a normal blood smear beside a slide demonstrating acute myeloid leukemia. The slides allowed students to compare healthy and abnormal findings and discuss how laboratory diagnostics play a role in identifying diseases.
Baptist University students studying biomedical sciences also facilitated an interactive activity building DNA structures using candy. The activity reinforced foundational genetics concepts in a fun and engaging way. Another activity allowed students to interact with the SimBaby tetherless simulator that helps nursing students learn to respond to critically ill pediatric patients.
Faculty from Baptist University College of Osteopathic Medicine, undergraduate Biomedical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science and Nursing shared information about academic programs offered at Baptist University and provided students with insight into educational pathways and career opportunities in health care.
