Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County’s Employee Health and Staff Development departments recently hosted a surgery skills fair featuring interactive educational rotations, a needlestick escape room and a skills lab. The skills fair emphasized hazard recognition, sharps safety and injury prevention while promoting staff engagement.
A da Vinci robotic surgical system representative presented education on surgical safety practices and the proper handling and disposal of sharps.
Employee Health facilitated a needlestick escape room to help prevent needlestick injuries in the surgical setting. Participants identified six potential blood and body fluid exposure hazards before “escaping” the room.
“Through education, hands-on practice and teamwork, our team members gained more confidence in safe sharps handling,” said Baptist Union County Manager of Infection Prevention and Employee Health Crystal McBrayer. “The escape room activity also helped reinforce the importance of team members protecting themselves and their colleagues.”
In collaboration with the Employee Health team, Staff Development provided supervised demonstrations of the safe loading and removal of scalpel blades.
