Tom Lee Park in Memphis reopened to the public after an extensive construction project on Saturday, Sept. 2, with a celebration that included a parade, blessing, ribbon cutting, singing, yoga and basketball. Baptist Memorial Health Care sponsored the redeveloped Heroes Plaza, which honors Tom Lee, who rescued 32 passengers of the M.E. Norman steamer after it capsized in the Mississippi River in 1925.
“Baptist is proud to support this public space honoring our local hero Tom Lee,” said Jason Little, president and CEO of Baptist Memorial Health Care. “Heroes Plaza allows us to recognize and honor first responders and medical professionals who, like Tom Lee, selflessly save lives daily.”
The new Tom Lee Park features a Civic Canopy, a floating roof for hosting classes, sports, games and concerts. The park also has play areas; walking and running loops; restrooms; concessions; water fountains; trees for shade; and River Fit, an outdoor gym with equipment.
