Baptist will join other area organizations in sponsoring the 7th Annual Latch On Memphis event. It is a free, citywide event designed to support and encourage breastfeeding. The event is a collaboration between the Shelby County Breastfeeding Coalition and Memphis BSTARS, Tennessee State Breastfeeding Alliance and other statewide coalitions.
The event will be held at Trinity Baptist Church on Saturday, August 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participating mothers will simultaneously breastfeed their babies, and during the event, participants can visit booths to learn about breastfeeding resources, register for giveaways and buy merchandise from vendors.
In 2016, there were more than 200 participants, and this year the event is on pace to surpass its previous participation goals. Memphis and Shelby County have one of the highest rates of infant mortality and obesity, but also one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding in the country. The event brings together health professionals, lactation educators, moms and their support teams to enlighten mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding.
