This week, Dr. William Cloud assumed the responsibilities of vice president and chief medical officer of Baptist Memorial Health Care, overseeing safety, quality and medical staff affairs. Since 2019, Dr. Cloud has served as the chief medical and academic officer for Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis.
“I believe Dr. Cloud’s experience, knowledge of our system and physician leaders, and demonstrated performance will all contribute to success in this new role. I am very excited to welcome him to our leadership team,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Chris Anderson.
Dr. Cloud also served as the chief quality and safety officer at Baptist Memphis. During this time, he led numerous initiatives to improve clinical outcomes and performance, including the creation of a multidisciplinary patient care collaboration workgroup, the establishment of the anticoagulation stewardship committee, restructuring of the Quality and Risk Management departments, and leadership of the National Quality Scorecard Optimization work. Baptist has seen significant improvements in most clinical quality scores as a result of these efforts.
He is a general surgeon who worked in private practice for many years in Charlotte and then Morganton, North Carolina. He attended medical school at the University of Virginia, completed an internship at the University of Mississippi and finished a general surgery residency ̶ including serving as chief resident ̶ at the University of Virginia. He also holds a Master of Academic Medicine from the Keck Medical School at the University of Southern California. An experienced physician leader, he has served in both physician and operational leadership roles at LifePoint Health and other health care organizations before coming to Baptist.
