Debra Denkins, certified admissions representative in Centralized Patient Access, was chosen as Service First Champion for her positive attitude and willingness to help. Debra was nominated by a colleague that she trained. “She is always eager to help in any way possible, training new team members and bringing forth helpful ideas for continued growth and education,” said the nominator. “Working side by side with Debra has been an absolute privilege. I owe my success in this department to her and cannot thank her enough for her kindness and patience.”

Maribeth Johns, registered nurse, earned Service First Champion recognition for going above and beyond to provide family-centered care. Maribeth, who is also a photographer, obtained consent from the parents of a one-month-old baby to commemorate the date. Maribeth brought her professional props and camera to the hospital to take the baby’s photos, which she gifted to the family. “The family was very touched and appreciative that this milestone moment in their baby’s life was celebrated even while she was still in the hospital,” said the nominator.

Maribeth also bought baby clothes to gift to a baby who was going home to an adoptive family who had not had time to prepare. “She saw the need and took the initiative to help. She has a heart of gold,” noted the nominator.

Baptist Union County

Kwadis Beard, occupational therapist, was named Service First Champion. He was nominated by a colleague for going above and beyond for a patient. The nominator wrote, “Performing your job is expected, but listening to your patient and then praying for them is a blessing.” The patient said, “We experienced God’s goodness when Kwadis came in. We all prayed together, and he had a message we needed to get us through this unexpected injury and hospitalization.”

Mississippi Baptist Medical Center

Cory Errington, lead respiratory therapist, earned Service First Champion recognition for helping a colleague in the Intensive Care unit. Jacqueline Hollins, unit health coordinator for the ICU East, earned Service First Champion recognition. Jacqueline’s nominator praised her compassion, teamwork and willingness to always step up to complete tasks as needed. One example is when a colleague working the night shift called in about being late for her shift because of a vehicle issue. The nominator said, “Without mentioning to anyone, she [Jacqueline] quickly finished her work and left to go pick up the night shift clerk. I found this to be such a thoughtful gesture, which exemplifies service before self.”
