Baptist Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine Students Provide Support to Manna House Memphis
Baptist Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine students participated in an outreach event at Manna House Memphis, which offers hospitality to people experiencing homelessness and poverty. The students talked with several clients and performed blood pressure and blood glucose-level checks.
Baptist Carroll County Hosts Students From West Carroll High School
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Carroll County welcomed students from a nutrition class at West Carroll High School for an educational visit. The students toured the Diabetes Education classroom with Clinical Dietitian Jamie Wallace. She shared insights into her role and the importance of medical nutrition therapy in patient care.
Cardiac Rehab Head Nurse Cindy Cole spoke about the fundamentals of healthy eating, portion control and how proper nutrition plays a key role in stroke prevention. The visit concluded with a behind-the-scenes tour of the cafeteria, led by Director of Food and Dietetic Services Vincent Curatola. Students learned about hospital food services and dietary planning.
Baptist Memorial Medical Education Department Inspires Students at Oakland Elementary School
The Baptist Memorial Medical Education department continued its engagement with young students by participating in the Oakland School Fair. At the event, Medical Resident Chad Ross from the Family Medicine Residency Program shared information about careers in health care with first through fifth grade students at Oakland Elementary School.
Lakisha Bah-Stewart, graduate medical education programs and projects manager for Baptist Memorial Medical Education, said, “We continue to reach the community by visiting elementary and middle schools to provide ‘like me’ experiences for students with the goal of residents participating in at least four school fairs each year.”
Baptist Union City Team Attends Union City Key Club Learning at Lunch Event
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City directors, managers and frontline staff who are alumni of Union City High School participated in the annual Union City High School Key Club Learning at Lunch event, which included a panel moderated by Baptist Union City Director of Pastoral Care Chaplain Michael Dennison.
Baptist Union City Administrator and CEO Skipper Bondurant said, “Investing in the next generation of leaders in this community is a passion of ours at Baptist Union City, and I am grateful these colleagues took time to collaborate with Union City High School students.”
Team members discussed their hospital roles, provided educational guidance, offered job seeking advice and shared high school memories. They also offered guidance on degrees that can be earned through Baptist Health Sciences University.
Director of Laboratory Erica Miller, member of the Union City High School Class of 2003, said, “Union City High School was instrumental in preparing me for my career as a medical laboratory scientist. My work at Baptist has allowed me to provide excellent patient care to my community for 19 years.”
Other Baptist Union City team members and Union City High School alumni who participated in the event include Jill Hopper, director of Administrative Quality and Ancillary Services; Ashley Cherry, manager of Infection Prevention and Employee Health; Frankie Underwood, analyst of clinical applications in Nursing Informatics; Whitney Wisdom, Admissions representative; Melissa Tully, lead speech therapist; and Rachel Adams, assistant physical therapist.
Veterans Speak at Baptist Union City Event
Baptist Union City team members gathered for an inspiring learning at lunch event in May with keynote presenters from the local Jones-Walker Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4862 and VFW auxiliary.
The auxiliary provided an emotional and uplifting remembrance service for all members of the service who are prisoners of war or missing in action. The event also included a retiring of the U.S. flag ceremony. Participating VFW members included Ed Southern, representing the U.S. Marines and Army; Sheila Fortner, auxiliary vice president; Pamela Crone, auxiliary president; and representing the U.S. Army, Don Byrd, Commander Michael Lynch and Ivan Bradley.
Hospital leadership will gather at the Jones-Walker VFW Post on Saturday, June 14 to observe the official VFW retiring of community flags ceremony.
Mississippi Baptist Medical Center Supports Go Red for Women
Mississippi Baptist Medical Center supported Go Red for Women, sponsored by the American Heart Association-Mississippi, on Friday, May 16 at the Jackson Convention Complex. The event featured a survivor fashion show, lunch and education on heart disease and strokes.
At the Strokes for Strokes table, presented by MBMC, participants painted a dress with their nondominant hand to simulate how a stroke patient might feel. Janis Lane, an MBMC Cardiac Rehab patient, served as a model during the survivor fashion show. She wore a red dress and heart-shaped sunglasses.
“Mississippi Baptist Medical Center is proud to support the important work of the American Heart Association-Mississippi to raise awareness among women about their risk for heart disease and to provide education on how to reduce personal risk,” said Bobbie Ware, CEO and administrator of MBMC. “We were also happy to see one of our Cardiac Rehab patients participating in the survivor fashion show.”
