Baptist Celebrates Service First Champions

Baptist Memorial Health Care team members recently recognized their colleagues as Service First Champions. Keep reading to find out more about their outstanding service, and contact your manager for details on how to nominate someone.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Booneville

Stella Grice, respiratory therapist, became a Service First Champion for her compassion after she helped a patient in need obtain new clothes, shoes and toiletry items. Grice’s compassion inspired colleagues to rally around the patient. “After a visit to the Closet of Hope and a run to Walmart and Dollar General, the patient received a couple suits, two pairs of shoes and personal hygiene products. Sometimes needs must be met outside of regular patient care, and this was a true mark of recognizing that need and rallying the troops to do something about it,” said the nominator.

During its recent Service First Champion celebration, Baptist Booneville recognized Lindsey Brown, Senior Care program director, with a Spotlight Award. This award honors contracted vendors who consistently exhibit the same dedication, professionalism and caring spirit as Service First Champions.

Baptist Booneville also presented the You Make A Difference Award to Tina McKinney, Environmental Services director; Sonya McClellan, nurse manager in Senior Care; Britney Justice, Emergency department nurse manager; and Kayla Brown, Laboratory director. The award celebrates the leaders who exemplify Baptist CARES and Service First principles through their daily actions, leadership and unwavering support for their teams.

Corporate Office

Stephanie Christopher, Clinical Review Advanced Abstractor in Cardiac Registry, won Service First Champion recognition for her dedication and willingness to go above and beyond. Christopher had recently transferred from her position as a stroke nurse at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis into her new role at Corporate. She continued to support her colleagues at Baptist Memphis, helping them prepare for their Joint Commission survey. “Stephanie continued to gracefully ‘co-own’ the work that she had done while at Memphis to support the process and the needed components she knew so well from her past experience with the Joint Commission,” said the nominator.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis

Iman Crump, customer service representative with the Metro Call Center at Baptist Memphis, was selected as a Service First Champion for her dedication and calm demeanor when dealing with an angry caller. During the long call, Crump secured the details needed to assist the caller and, ultimately, a safe resolution. She also prayed with the caller, helping to calm him.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi

A patient’s spouse nominated Kelly Jo Ashley, clinical resource nurse in the Intensive Care Step-down unit for Service First Champion for her compassion and willingness to go the extra mile. The nominator said her husband had several lengthy hospital stays and was not always easy to deal with. Kelly Jo was one of his nurses during each stay. “She found a recliner in an empty room and brought it to me so I could prop my feet up. I could tell she truly had compassion for both of us, but was firm with him about things he needed to do,” said the nominator. “I think Baptist is very blessed to have her. My husband even said, ‘Where do I know her from? She treats me like she knows me.’”

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County

A colleague nominated Lacosta Watson, nursing supervisor, for going above and beyond to honor a mother’s special request after a personal loss. Watson brought supplies from home to fulfill the wish. The nominator said, “Lacosta was a shining example of what Service First is. Her selfless act is something that will be with this family forever, and they will be forever thankful Lacosta worked that night.”

Mississippi Baptist Medical Center

Angel Cockrell, patient care assistant, became a Service First Champion for her dedication and positive attitude. “She makes patients feel special, seen and heard through her compassion and dedication to them. She is so helpful to nursing staff, often asking is there anything she can do for us. Her positivity is a beacon of light for our hardworking unit,” said the colleague who nominated Cockrell.
