Annual mandatory training is in full swing! This training is carefully planned to help ensure safety and compliance and the best possible care for patients. Corporate Compliance Officer Kim Danehower provides guidance on what’s new this year, and why the training is important.
Why is mandatory training important?
Training in several different areas is required by law each year or when a team member is hired.
One of the important benefits of mandatory training is that it helps team members understand why we ask them to do things in a specific way. Understanding the “why” behind some of the things we ask makes following the regulations easier.
The training also contains helpful reminders about how to use our Baptist TIPS Hotline, 877-BMH-TIPS, to report acts of abuse, fraud or violations of Baptist’s Standards of Conduct. Reports can be made anonymously using the Baptist TIPS online form.
What is covered in mandatory training?
Modules include training on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and more depending on a team member’s clinical role.
HIPAA training ensures team members understand how to protect patient health information, while OSHA training helps protect everyone from harm. ACA compliance is vital for providing good patient care and to ensure our eligibility to accept Medicare and Medicaid. One of the core elements of an effective ACA compliance program is training.
Another area of training involves the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, which requires team members to be knowledgeable about the False Claims Act that aims to help prevent inaccurate claims submitted to the government, as well as the Whistleblower Protection Act, which protects employees who report false claims.
What’s new this year?
We’ve added training on our video and telephonic interpretive services for patients who speak limited English or those who communicate through American Sign Language (ASL).
It’s important all patient-facing team members are aware of how to ensure each patient understands what’s going on with their health care and has the best possible experience. This service also helps us stay compliant with the ACA.
Where can team members find the training?
To access training modules, select “Popular Sites > HealthStream” on the MyBaptist homepage, which automatically logs users into HealthStream.
For a shared kiosk workstation, log in from the Baptist Storefront by selecting the intranet icon. Team members experiencing issues logging in may contact the Help Desk at 901-227-7777.
What is the deadline to complete the training?
Training must be completed by Friday, Sept. 27. Team members will get the best experience by allowing time to space out the modules rather than trying to do them all in one week. The best time to start is now.
