DAISY winners help patients face loss

Amber Gatewood, a nurse on 3 South at Baptist Memphis, stepped outside of traditional nursing duties to fulfill the last wish of a hospice patient. When she discovered his only regret was not marrying his girlfriend of seven years, Amber took it upon herself to plan, arrange, and even help finance a small wedding for the couple. She secured a Baptist chaplain, a marriage license through her charge nurse and county clerk, flowers and even a cake arranged by the dietitian. And in the end, she even bought the couple a wedding gift.

Hannah Bock, a nurse on Baptist DeSoto’s 7th floor, noticed a patient awoke crying and upset.

“She asked me if I was OK. I said no,” Hannah’s nominator wrote. “I was crying; it was my sister’s birthday. She has been gone for six years. I heard her call my name as plain as day. Hannah pulled a chair to the end of my bed and talked to me until I was better. She cared about what I was going through. That made me smile. She helped me through a bad day and I want to say thank you very much!”
