For patients undergoing long-term cancer treatments, the waiting time for families can become a weighty proposition. As patient James Holbrook was undergoing treatment that began in December, his fiancé Susie passed the time by crocheting an afghan. Ironically, on the day of his last treatment, she finished the afghan.
Taking everyone by surprise, Susie requested an impromptu raffle for all Baptist Cancer Center and Boston Baskin Cancer Foundation team members—with the winner taking home the afghan. Grateful for the care James received, she wanted the afghan to serve as her sincere thanks for the care James received.
“It was a very generous gesture on her part, and it is a gorgeous afghan. We normally try to be here to brighten the patient’s day, but in this case, they were here to brighten mine,” said Tabitha Smith, who won the raffle.
