Dr. Catherine Munn recently joined BMG-Jenkins and Nease Internal Medicine. The Memphis native graduated from and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Munn shares more about her background and experience below.

[toggle title=”Can you summarize your educational background and career?” state=”open”] I grew up in Memphis, Tenn., and attended White Station High School in East Memphis. I then went on to college at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., where I majored in psychology and graduated in 2006. I then attended the University of Memphis from 2006-2008 to complete my pre-medical course work and went on to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine from 2008-2012, where I graduated with highest honors. I also was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society and received the Gerald I. Plitman Internal Medicine Award. I did my internal medicine residency training at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and graduated in June 2015.
[/toggle] [toggle title=”What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?” state=”close”] I went into primary care medicine because I enjoy treating a wide variety of conditions. I love the fact that I see something new every day, and that I am never quite sure what the day holds. However, I think what I enjoy the most about practicing medicine is the long-lasting relationships I make with my patients. As a primary care physician, you may end up caring for an entire family. You get to learn about your patients’ jobs, hobbies, children, grandchildren, and be their cheerleader through the health challenges they face. These relationships are truly the most rewarding part of the job for me.
[/toggle] [toggle title=”What made you decide to join Baptist?” state=”close”] My husband, Jules Munn, and I both decided to join with Baptist because we felt very welcomed by the Baptist Medical Group community and identified with Baptist’s mission of providing patient-focused, high-quality, team-based care. Additionally, I really enjoy being able to focus my efforts on providing great care to my patients and less on the details of managing a practice.
[/toggle] [toggle title=”What do you enjoy doing outside of your job?” state=”close”] Outside of my job I love spending time with my family. My husband is a hospitalist at Baptist DeSoto, and we have a 20-month-old son (Max) who keeps us on our toes! My husband and I are both from Memphis, so we have lots of family events that we attend, and we have many friends from high school and beyond here in Memphis that we enjoy spending our time off with. Additionally, I am a fitness fanatic. I try my best to run every day. In addition to running, I go to Barre fitness classes and do yoga in my living room. When we have time off from work my husband and I love to travel. Our last trip was to Thailand and Cambodia, where we saw the ruins of Angkor Wat.
[/toggle] [toggle title=”What is a highlight of your career?” state=”close”] I just finished my residency in internal medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center so my career is short so far, but I believe the highlight will always be joining with BMG-Jenkins and Nease Internal Medicine. The physicians and staff here share my philosophy of providing high-quality health care with an emphasis on preventive care. We are fortunate to get to spend a lot of time with our patients, and we don’t double book. It is the way I have always dreamed of practicing medicine and now I get to live it.
[/toggle] [toggle title=”What would you like your Baptist team members to know about you?” state=”close”] I am passionate about preventive medicine. I firmly believe in the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and I work hard to make sure each patient gets comprehensive preventive care and counseling on ways to improve his or her health at each visit.
