Christine Malone, RN, recently published her first book, Addiction Through The Eyes Of A Nurse, a memoir chronicling her challenging journey to become a successful nurse.
“I’ve always wanted more, I didn’t want to settle,” said Christine, a nurse on 3 North at Baptist Memphis. “Through faith and the word of God, I had to continue on and rise above.”
As a single mother of two boys, Christine struggled with living on welfare and faced troubling times that included divorce, rape, and addiction. She said her breaking point came after a conversation with the government worker who gave her a monthly welfare check.
“I asked her, ‘Are you sure this is it? This isn’t enough for me to live off of.’ She looked up at me and said, ‘It’s only meant for you to survive.’”
From that moment, Christine decided she would no longer accept that type of lifestyle. She began her nursing education at Southwest Tennessee Community College and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Union University in 2004. She received her master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Phoenix in 2009.
Addiction Through The Eyes Of A Nurse includes the challenges, fears, rejections, and triumphs Christine encountered and how she overcame them to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She hopes to inspire, motivate and encourage other young women with her story.
“I love being a nurse and interacting with my patients, especially doing little things for them. They appreciate when you make them feel special,” said Christine. “It makes my journey worth it.”
