Memphis medical pioneer visits pediatric ER

The Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children’s Hospital recently hosted one of its most prestigious guests to date—pediatric spine specialist Dr. Alvin Crawford.

Drs. Esmond and Lou Arrindell, neonatologists at the Baptist Women’s Hospital, hosted the visit with Bluff City Medical Society. Baptist Vice President of Government Affairs Rev. Keith Norman and Baptist Women’s Hospital Administrator and CEO Anita Vaughn toured the Memphis native, who was the first African American to graduate from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

After completing his residency at the Harvard University Orthopedic Program, Dr. Crawford began a distinguished career, highlighted by his 29-year tenure as director of orthopedic surgery at Cincinnati Children’s’ Hospital Medical Center. He also has traveled the world as a visiting professor; he has lectured and/or performed surgery in 41 countries. His pediatric orthopedics teaching module is widely used throughout the United States and in 33 other countries. One of the top 10 educators in the first 100 years at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Dr. Crawford has been named one of the country’s best doctors every year since 1996.

In its first four months of operation, the pediatric ER treated 4,834 patients—an average of 39 a day.
