Hospitals generally are pretty serious places, but for one week in mid-May, Baptist leaders lighten the mood to celebrate and thank team members for their hard work and dedication. Even though the events are designed to be fun, leaders are serious about honoring the many contributions of team members who routinely go beyond the scope of their jobs to take care of patients, families and one another. Some are recognized with Service First awards and similar designations, but most do their work with little fanfare. Hospital Week is a time to celebrate all team members, whether they deliver care at the bedside, welcome patients in the admissions department, or provide the nonmedical services needed to keep Baptist running smoothly.
This year’s National Hospital Week activities included some traditional favorites—free meals and treats, fun activities and contests. Others focused on health, as facilities held health fairs, exercise classes, and offered other health services. Baptist Pride Day capped off the week, and team members systemwide donned their favorite Baptist blue polos.

They also were treated to breakfast, popcorn, smoothies and a Mexican feast. The Baptist Women’s Health Center Mobile Mammography unit visited to offer women convenient mammograms, and team members completed puzzles and a scavenger hunt for prizes. A silent auction raised $420 for the Employee Emergency Assistance Fund, as team members bought a guitar signed by country music singer-songwriter Eric Church and several copies of a coffee table book about Memphis cuisine.

Health also was also a focus during the week, as the hospital offered free health screenings. More than 100 team members took advantage of the opportunity to learn more about their health. Shutterbugs had a chance to show off their work during the hospital’s annual Employee Photo Contest, and team members also competed in Game Day contests and the Baptist Idol talent competition. The hospital also continued to celebrate Nurses Week with a waffle breakfast for nursing staff. One of the most successful activities was the HumanaVitality Health Check event, which drew 160 team members. The activity, during which three team members won door prizes and one won a Fitbit Flex, helped the hospital achieve a 62 percent HumanaVitality participation rate.
