A former medical assistant at a South Florida medical practice has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for stealing patient identities from a hospital database.
The employee stole the identities by accessing the hospital system’s database through a computer at the medical office where she worked. She sold 2,000 stolen identities to another person for $1 each. According to authorities, the person who purchased the identities used them to file fraudulent federal income tax returns.
