The Baptist Health Sciences University’ Medical Laboratory Science program received the Certificate of Accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences in October. According to the NAACLS Guide to Accreditation, it is a process of external peer review in which an agency grants public recognition to a program of study or an institution that meets established qualifications and educational standards.
This certification allows graduates of the program to sit for the national certification examination in the MLS category, which is required for those graduates seeking employment in a clinical setting.
“The accreditation process for MLS programs is very extensive,” said Darius Wilson, chair of the Medical Laboratory Science program at the Baptist Health Sciences University. “NAACLS has 22 standards that have to have written responses and documentation provided; this includes clinical affiliation agreements, clinical rotation documentation for each site, admission requirements, program curriculum, qualified faculty, etc.”
