First of its kind in the area
Baptist Huntingdon recently opened its new senior care unit, the first time such a service has been offered in Carroll County.
The 12-bed geriatric-psychiatric unit offers treatment for mental health issues commonly seen in seniors 65 and older, such as severe depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Support and resources for families are also available, and caregivers are encouraged to actively participate in the patient’s care.
“The senior care program will fill a need in the community, especially for baby boomers whose needs are expected to grow as the numbers of boomers increase,” said Susan Breeden, CEO and administrator of Baptist Huntingdon. “For instance, in Carroll County, the number of adults 65 and older is expected to grow from 5,698 to 6,075 by 2018, according to census data.”
Physicians, mental health professionals or family members may make referrals directly to the program.
Warning signs such as depression, disorientation, severe memory loss, increased social withdrawal, suicidal thoughts, sleep disturbances, extreme fluctuations in weight, loss of interest in appearance and hallucinations can signal a need for treatment.
