Women’s Hospital Service First Champ shows compassion with non-English speaking parents

Monica Townsend, a coordinator at the Baptist Women’s Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, was named the hospital’s first quarter Service First Champion for her compassionate attitude and willingness to help patients and families. According to her nominator, she is a “gentle soul” who often serves as a translator for Spanish-speaking parents.

Her skills and caring spirit were put to the test when a couple delivered a baby that had to be taken to the NICU, then transferred to LeBonheur for emergency surgery. Townsend translated everything the neonatologist told the new parents, then helped them complete the forms they had to sign.

“Monica consistently displays a compassionate attitude, even at the labor and delivery desk, which can be very stressful,” the nominator wrote. “She seeks out ways to help and is a soothing presence to patients and their families. We are lucky to have her!”
