Baptist Union City Service First recipient helps patients stay on time

Julia Lawson, registered nurse at Baptist Union City, puts her patient’s needs before her own. Lawson works in the outpatient surgery department and recently helped an elderly couple who expressed being nervous about arriving for surgery at 6:30 a.m. The couple didn’t have an alarm clock, and they had no family to call and wake them up. Lawson offered to set her own clock to make sure they arrived for surgery on time. She called the couple the night before to remind them she would be calling early in the morning to wake them up.

Although it was several hours before she needed to wake up, Lawson reached out to the couple in time for them to get ready. She also brought them an alarm clock and took the time to show them how to set it in case they ever needed it.

Colleagues say this is only one small example of the many services she provides for patients and families at Baptist.

At a reception held recently at Baptist Union City, Lawson was recognized as Service First Champion for first quarter fiscal year 2013. She has been a Baptist Union City colleague since 2000.

“No matter how long the hours or what kind of day it is, Julia can be counted on to not only provide the best care possible, but to do so with a big smile and a warm heart,” her nomination stated.
“She truly exemplifies what it means to serve others before ourselves, and she is very much an asset to this department and this hospital. We are truly blessed to have her as a co-worker and friend.”
