A solid Foundation helps us grow

Every year around this time, our Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation holds its annual “Above and Beyond” employee giving campaign. This year’s campaign began on Thursday and will last until July 31. You may have heard of Above and Beyond, but do you know what the Foundation does with the money it raises?

The Foundation’s purpose is to raise money to help enhance the care we provide to our patients. Some of our facilities and technology that we rely on to treat patients wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the Foundation’s fundraising efforts. It played a key role in helping to fund the Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children’s Hospital and the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House—two facilities that have made a difference in the lives of thousands of people.

The Foundation also established the Employee Emergency Assistance Fund to help you during tough times. A couple of years ago when a tornado struck several Mississippi towns, the Foundation was there for our team members, giving them much-needed financial support to help them get back on their feet. And Foundation funds help hospice patients systemwide fulfill lifelong dreams through the Priceless Wishes program.

Foundation team members also work with hospitals to secure grant money that benefits patients in many of our hospitals. For more than a decade, the Foundation has earned grants from the Susan G. Komen Foundation that allowed Baptist hospitals in Memphis and Mississippi to provide free or reduced-priced mammograms to the underserved. Baptist Golden Triangle was able to start an internal medicine residency program because of a $500,000 grant that the Foundation received from the Appalachia Regional Commission. The Foundation also earned a $30,000 Tennessee Department of Health grant to build a walking trail at Baptist Huntingdon.

The Foundation also helps us provide crucial services in our communities free of charge. The Kemmons Wilson Family Center for Good Grief and the programs that come out of it – which have helped children, teens and adults cope with the loss of loved ones – depend on Foundation funds to survive. Thanks to the Foundation, we’re opening two satellite facilities this year—one in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and one in Midtown Memphis. Our Baptist Operation Outreach mobile health care clinic travels to several locations to treat homeless patients four days a week.

Many of you have generously given to the Foundation over the years. You gave $1.2 million to help build our hospice house. You contributed more than $500,000 to build the Baptist Children’s Hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit. And every year, you give half a million dollars to the Above and Beyond campaign.

Your donations are saving and changing lives. One hundred percent of the money you give benefits the funds you indicate on your Above and Beyond form, so the people you want to help get every penny you donate. We are so fortunate to have the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation, and I am so grateful to work with generous, caring team members like you.

If you would like to donate money or PTO hours, please do so on the Above and Beyond form you have received, or contact the Foundation at 901-227-7123.
