April is often the time of year when we celebrate the ultimate sacrificial act—Jesus Christ giving His life for our sins. And it’s fitting that Donate Life Month is also in April. It, too, celebrates individuals’ and families’ selfless decisions to give part of themselves or their loved ones to help others. It’s an act that has saved many lives, but one that’s not done often enough.
That’s why another key focus of Donate Life Month is encouraging people to sign up to be organ donors. Mid-South Transplant is leading this charge locally, and you can learn more on their website.
If you’re on the fence about whether or not to donate your or a loved one’s organs, think about one of our patients named Khadija Elshabazz. She’s a 25-year-old mother of two who’s getting married next month. And she needs a new heart.
Thanks to the great heart transplant team at Baptist Memphis and the advanced technology they offer their patients, Khadija can be at home with her family while she awaits a donor heart. But machines can’t keep her alive forever. Khadija is one of thousands of people whose lives depend on the kindness of others.
During April, I hope you will consider organ donation. It is a priceless act of service that we encourage all to consider.
