Extraordinary empathy

Jason Little

A couple of months ago, we added a form to our Baptist Leader site for you to submit story ideas. So far, we have received 50 submissions, including this very special one from Baptist team member Dina Bachor.

Dina shared an incredible story of heartbreak and empathy, starting with a devastating diagnosis. Here’s what she wrote:

Dina Bachor’s grandson, Kaden

“My grandson, Kaden, was diagnosed at age 2 with neuroblastoma stage IV (high-risk cancer) on June 16, 2017. I remember the day I got the phone call with the news, as I was in my department, celebrating two of my co-workers’ birthdays. They stopped the celebration, we prayed, and they got me to the hospital to start Kaden’s journey.

“From that day forward my department co-workers have given so much strength, support and kindness to myself and my family. So many other co-workers, leadership team, and physicians throughout the hospital have shown support as well. I had one co-worker cut our yard every week, shoulders to cry on, toys (and happy gifts) for Kaden, money donations (I would walk into my office and find mystery $20 bills), gift cards, restaurant gift cards, prayers and so much more. Without all the support and prayers, I truly do not know how I would have survived.

“As Kaden was a true warrior he could no longer fight, and gained his wings on January 13, 2018 at the age of 3. I want all my co-workers, leadership team, and physicians to know what an impact they made on helping my family through a very rough time. I want everyone to hear that we not only take care of our patients and their families, but that Baptist takes care of their co-workers, as well.”

LeighAnn Basinger, Robin McElhaney, Brad Adams, Amy Kirby, Brooke McCain, Donna Aven, Janet Tidwell, Linda House and Steve Edmunds are among the many team members who helped Dina through this difficult time.

I am proud of you for so many reasons, but I’m proudest of your empathy. It is such a privilege to work alongside you because every day, you show how much you care about our patients and one another. I want to join Dina in thanking and celebrating LeighAnn, Robin, Brad, Amy, Brooke, Donna, Janet, Linda, Steve and countless other Baptist team members for their incredible selflessness and generosity. Thank you for maintaining the culture of empathy that makes Baptist special.
